Pietersite: The Gemstone Born from Storms

A Geological Masterpiece from Namibia

Pietersite, a rare and visually striking gemstone, is formed through a complex geological process deep within the Earth’s crust. Its formation requires crocidolite or blue asbestos to be repeatedly infiltrated and replaced by silica gel in the deep crust for millions of years, and finally forms a collection of quartz and agate with interwoven filamentary or layered structures.

This intricate structure gives Pietersite its signature swirling patterns—like a frozen storm in stone. It is not just a gemstone, but a testament to geological chaos and harmony.

One Source, One Legend: Storm Ridge, Namibia

The only known source of gem-quality Pietersite in the world is Storm Ridge in Namibia. This region produces less than 5 tons annually, making it one of the most exclusive natural gemstones available.

Among these, the rarest variety—dark blue Pietersite, also known as the “Eye of the Storm”—accounts for only 0.3% of global output. Its intense color and high filament density make it a coveted piece for collectors and connoisseurs alike.

Hythe’s Commitment to Authenticity

At Hythe, we uphold a philosophy of integrity and excellence. We source our raw Pietersite exclusively from Namibian mines, working directly with the country’s first licensed mining company.

Each rough stone undergoes a rigorous screening process by professional geologists for over 3 months to ensure quality. Only specimens with ≥ 70% filamentary inclusions—meeting strict international standards—are selected for use in our pieces.

“We don’t just choose stones. We honor their journey.” — Hythe
